On social networks there was a meme of Messi and Ronaldo with the text to "go and get the coronavirus vaccine from them, because they are making way more money than scientists or health workers". The discussion underneath was very emotional and even hate speech was easy to find. In football there is a lot of money involved, but have you ever asked the question "why is it so"?
Football is without any doubt the most popular game on Earth and there are billions of fans watching it, and this is the primary input to make the wheel of madness spinning. The more fans, the more attention and of course - MONEY.
Money is in today's football the so-called Bible. The original passion and love for the sports has been supplemented with extravagant lifestyle, expensive cars, luxury homes - all sourced by extremely high salaries.
This is what happens when you love the game too much. People in crowds are queuing for tickets, buying souvenirs, and pre-paying football on TV. All this is making billions. Only FC Barcelona was supposed to have this season a turnover higher than 1 billion EUR. Football players as the main actors of this madness want of course their piece of this incredibly big and tasteful cake. Just imagine being in their position. Would you agree on making 400 000 per year because you need no more when you know you can make 3 millions? I am sure none of us would settle for peanuts.
There are no football matches being played recently. Some clubs from all around the World already cut salaries to even players such as Messi, and the cut-amounts go as high as 70%. After Juventus Turin, Inter Milan, FC Barcelona is now Real Madrid expected to join the club in the first round. In the second round there will be most likely no significant football club without salary-cuts during the following months. Losses of the football industry are expected to be in the billions and there is no reason for some players - even the best ones, to keep the 100% when the rest are suffering.
In 2-4 months we expect the fun to start over again. For sure behind closed doors, but it will be here and we will look back at how people and most of all the famous football players behaved during the tragedy the coronavirus brought. People will not forget and for sure not forgive those who did not participate in helping. It will take years to be 100% back. And then we most likely see again the incredibly high salaries and billions of people will be watching the drama. But this will be a more pleasant drama than we are experiencing Today.
This morning we see 872,830 registered coronavirus cases worldwide with 43,271 deaths and 184,533 recovered. The end of this current drama is still in no sight.
