At least for a few weeks we can say goodbye to the most popular game in the World called football. The Premier League is scheduled to start not earlier than April 30, but nobody knows if there will not be another delay.
We have March 26 now and as I was checking the latest football scores, only 3 out of 94 fixtures have been played. The day is not over yet but the outlook shows nothing promising. Looking at the upcoming weekend (March 28-29), already now we can say that from 1115 scheduled football matches in the top 850+ football leagues from the entire World, we have 1061 postponed or completely cancelled. The number will for sure not go down but rather grow.
If you feel like betting on football, you have not many options left. Some countries such as Angola or Belarus are still being played but as the number of coronavirus deaths grows, even those are expected to follow.
The quick answer is "Not much". You really have to be desperate to bet on events such as Russian ping-pong league or Nepal's A Division. E-sports or online casinos provide some substitution, but it is not the same. As I was working for a bookmaker, only about 8% of punters accepted some free spins or any generous bonus offers. They however never really stick to slots or roulette. From my experience it is a different type of mentality which leads to only one possible solution - just wait. One more month (hopefully) and the football fun is back.
But do not expect things to be the same. Nothing will be the same again - ever. Many people will die and millions will come close to the line of poverty. People will suffer and after the misery is over, they might care for the important stuff and realize that sports and gambling is nothing more than sports and gambling.
Somehow I feel and hope that the World will stay united as it is now and people start to search for real values. People already noticed that football players are not the real idols and heroes, but rather the common people from the NHS.
Good luck World!
